I don't think the PO was being dishonest. He said it was primarily used on horse farm so I assume it probably didn't get a lot of heavy use. Then, for some reason someone took it out on the highway and baked it since there was no coolant. This is one of those cases where I cannot believe the engine even ran in that condition. When it was delivered, the PO actually drive it up the driveway! I jumped it to move it into the garage but it was jsut way too loud without a muffler.

Was able to pull the pan and pistons today. Helps when you've done it before. The #2 piston had a hole int he side. #3 piston had the rings fused into the ring grooves. Did find a couple of small pieces of the rings in the oil pan.
Everything looks ok except for the #2 cylinder wall where the piston blew out. Does this cylinder look salvageable at all? I really didn't want to get into a full rebuilt, but it looks like I either need to do that or get a used or rebuilt engine.

Dude it's time to cut your losses and either buy a reman motor or pull one from the bone yard. Personally I would find one that you can hear run out of a donor and swap it in

No problem! That'll buff right out!

Only way to really know is to get it to a machine shop and see what they say. It might bore out to a usable cylinder.

Did some thinking and will go after a good used engine first. Looks like they a re plentiful, just need to make sure I get one that is in good running condition. I think I have had just about everything on a Cherokee apart now. One good thing out of this and one of the reasons we bought this one is that it's also chili pepper red. We had not gotten around to painting my wife's rebuilt 99 (aka Tubthumper): https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/reb...-apron-226647/

This Jeep will get the other panels and those will get repainted very soon. Hopefully I can get an engine in the next 2 weeks and then this will be a saturday afternoon project tot finish it.

Found a used engine with 118k on it (from a 98 too) for $500. Should be able to pick that up late this week and pull the head to take a look at the top end. I already have a head gasket and head bolts so may as well use them. At least I can replace a few things that I have had fail on my '99 that were a PITA with the engine in place, primarily the freeze plug on the back of the block and teh transmission front input shaft seal.
Hopefully can get this rig back on the road in ~2 weeks. Guess I'll need to figure out how to dispose of a 4.0 block that I don't need.

IMHO I'd leave the head alone on the donor engine. Swap all of the gaskets and maybe the freeze plugs, otherwise let it roll. Just my Lincolns

Definitely not swapping the freeze plugs. I think I can splurge for the $2.69 and get new ones. Been there and done that with the freeze plug on the back needing replaced. Happened to my wife's 99 Cherokee before I learned to do all this myself. Was literally $3.50 for the part and ~$900 in labor. Not doing that through a dealer again.
I'll see what condition the motor is in and go from there. If it's clean, I'll just check under the valve cover and under the oil pan (once it's on the engine stand). Will replace freeze plugs for sure.

Got most of everything ready to pull the engine out. Got snow today today so I wasn't able to push the jeep back into the driveway to turn it around. Having the engine bay by the garage door should make the transplant a lot easier.
Took the water pump off and was pretty surprised by the condition of the impeller. they must have used tap water. Also looks like they used a decent amount of RTV. Looks like it got into the engine block near the water pump. I pulled the radiator all the way out and got some liquid. It looked like rust colored water. Will have to flush the heater core too after seeing that.

Looks like mine a month or two ago. Yeah, you definitely want to flush that heater core.

Picked up the replacement motor today. Didn't quite get it on to the stand tonight. Taking a break to watch some basketball. Going to take a peek inside tomorrow and hope I got a decent motor. debating whether to paint sone of it Kentucky blue (daughter goes to University of Kentucky). Would probably spend more time cleaning/painting than it would take to get the old motor out and get the replacement in. Will see how long it takes to get the old one out tomorrow.
