00' XJ Power no crank w/key
Hey y'all! Hoping someone here will be able to help me figure out an easier way to start my car haha. I have power when I turn the key into the on position but no crank at all, not even a solenoid click anymore.
I put in a NEW starter about 6 months ago and that fixed the problem (it did click before I replaced it) until about a month ago when the same thing happened, except no click. So I put in the new starter (again) and a new battery (they said it was shot) and it still wouldn't even click.
Long story short I ended up running a wire from the positive terminal on the battery to the positive wire on the starter every time I wanted to start it. (I would have the key in all the way forward and reach down and touch the 2 wires together)
That's been working magnificently, but I've been trying to figure out the root of the problem in the first place.
I've tried the whole deal with the NSS in park/neutral or anywhere in between, so please don't suggest that😂

You describe that 'jumping' the cable that runs from the battery to the starter solves the problem. Your issue therefor seems to be the connection between your battery and your starter. Either loose/no connection, or corroded wire etc.
If you like diagnostics you can take out a multimeter and do voltage drop test.
It would be nice to verify that with key ON, in the starter relay sockets jumping terminal 30 and 87 doesn't start the engine WITHOUT the jumper wire between battery and starter- and DOES start it with that jumper in place.

As Roler mentioned, invest in a voltmeter or a test light if you don't have one and start troubleshooting. It could be the ignition switch, NSS, or starter relay. The starter relay is a good place to start.
If it's the NSS, you can usually put the shifter in N to start but not always, so don't discount that right away.

We can always bypass the NSS for diagnostic purposes (or driving purposes as is currently the case in mine) but we'll get to that.
Try what I suggested and let us know. Then we look further at the relay etc like Lawsoncl has mentioned
I'm positive we can sort this for you, if you're willing to spend a bit of time on the process.

Did you check the fuses? Fuse 10 (20a) in the PDC and Fuse 19 (10a) in the junction block.
Fuse 10 provides power the starter solenoid when the relay is energized. Jumping pins C6 and C7 in the starter relay socket should spin the starter assuming the fuse is good regardless of key position. You should check for 12V at Pin C7
