If you see a clear correlation with gassing it, and bubbling out the Rad, your pulling the head. Idk your $ point. With 180K that's maybe a little tough. It does seem the pistons fall apart before the rod does. (although I hear they are connected).
If you invested in a "bullet proof" head, you could at least hold on to that and stick it on a JY engine with lower miles if need be? Just my .02....
Spotty as they might be, you will want wet/dry compression #'s before you pull the head.
