Default 01 jeep cherokee died took forever to start, runs like crap

Alright so im breaking trail in like 6" of snow uphill, get to the top of the hill and stop and the jeep dies, wont start for probably 10 minutes atleast, when it finally does start it bareley does and runs awful, sounds like its missing and running super rough, i turned around and drove it 20ish miles back home it seemed to be in a limp mode, wouldnt go past 3k rpm, and the cheak engine light would be solid for a few minutes and then flash for a few minutes and just keep doing that all the way home, so any ideas? My first thought was a head gasket, but i figure it would have been overheating and steaming out the tailpipe. Anything helps thanks!

First step is to pull the codes. If someone is trying to tell you why their sick, you should listen. Report back with the codes and I'm sure someone can give you some advice

Cheers

Yup, retrieve codes and post the exact code(s) here for comment. Gotta use the technology provided to you by your Jeep. You will need a code reader or a scan tool to get the codes. If you don't have access to either of these, take it to a parts store like AutoZone who will read the codes for free.

But would be best not to drive it as if you have a flashing check engine light, that indicates a serious misfire, which will trash your catalytic converter quickly if not addressed ASAP.

Could be totally unrelated, but my jeep did this symptom you talk about on a trail and I felt like I could barely move. Turned out with was my alternator.
