01 xj
I recently purchased a 01 xj . Now I'm starting to hear some bad things about the 01 engines. I've already put a radiator, water pump, and a thermostat on it. Thought it was fixed now starting to heat up again just till electric fan kicks on then it goes back down. this is at idle it's fine going down the road. Hopefully not a head gasket or cracked head I heard they are bad for that.

How recently the new parts? Was there any air pockets left in the system, rad or block? Have you topped up the coolant, does the coolant level seem to go down, does it disappear? Is your oil level rising? Is there any white smoke from the tailpipe on warm days, not just cold starts? One good thing is the electric fan and sensor are operating correctly. What is the current climate like where you live, what is the daily weather temperatures? Just because the head can crack doesn't mean it will. Are there any other symptoms or observations you could share?

The #1 cause of "temp creep" on the 4.0 is the fan clutch. Often ignored, it is a cheap part to purchase and easy to install it. Consider replacing this.
You have replaced a number of key components in the cooling system, which is a very good idea.
Keep an eye on your coolant reservoir every time you open the hood. The #1 symptom of a cracked 0331 cylinder head is "unexplained coolant loss".
As mentioned, just because they can crack, doesn't mean yours will. Keep your cooling system top notch and enjoy your XJ!

I live in southern Ohio the temps have been in the 60s this week. On the issue of coolant loss it doesn't seem to loading any or gaining oil. I'm going to check the fan clutch later today . The temp does not always creep up just time to time . So that could be the issue . New problem happened today while driving the gauges shut off for about 5 mins. Where the mileage is usually at it said no BOS . Any ideals on that thanks for the help this forum has been a great help.

First, disconnect the negative battery cable!
Then, Take the dash apart, and remove the gauge cluster.
There are two connectors that you can douse with electronics spray cleaner, douse the male and female connectors thoroughly.
Take a small screw driver and scrape the posts on the back of the gauge cluster. Then paste the diaelectric grease on the terminals. Connect the the gauge back together, then before putting the dash back connect your battery and test by turning your key on.
May have to stick your hand between the dash and gauge cluster to seat the connectors better.
Also, wear eye protection when using the spray (ouch).
I had to do this Sunday night after driving 2 hours with no-bus and no speedometer through speed traps on the Interstate. So far today it had been just fine.
