01' Xj bogging down in 1-2 gear selection.

Its not a rev limiter i don't think. It acts as if the Motor is not giving out enough power to turn the wheels and is bogging out. It doesn't bog when i present the same situation except in mud and the tires are spinning and the motor does not have as much load on it. I don't know, im at a loss here. My grandfather seems to think the bands are burnt in it due to the burnt smell of the tranny fluid but i didn't mention the bogging issue to him.

Just did a search of "no power under load" and looked through three pages and did not find anything that sounded like the same problem i am having. i will continue my search though.

Sounds like the tranny is going. Especialy since your beating on it lol.JK.
Well #1. brown tranny fluid means a burning/burnt clutch pack(s) and bands.
changing the fluid would be its demise,so DON'T do it. If it hasn't been done at regular intervals its whole life, it will completely burn up.
At most I woud just change the screen and reuse the old fluid or most of it.
If that don't work....
Get a new/used tranny.
Now if the fluid wasn't burnt i would say check the torque converter locke up sensor.
Damn shame. But you should have no problem getting one out of the j-yard for around 150-500. depending on milage.

Ya a drain and fill and a flush are different. I shouldn't have a problem and if I do I can get a tranny with 133k on it for 200 bones. Could the bogging issue be my calipers dragging? They squeek when I let of the break pedal every once in a while.

Yes Its a possibility, or if your rear drums are out of alignment. But the squeek from the calipers just indicates a dirty brake pad slide, not the caliper its self. Its more likely that its your drums more then any other part of your braking system since most people who drums now just throw it together and dont adjust the hand brake cable after doing the shoes. Even if brakes are the problem id drain and refill that fluid asap, change the filter as well.

First if you are going 30 and dropping into 1-2 it should be going into 1st gear. It should stay in first till you get to about 4500 rpm. Sounds to me like you have a Converter slipping or bands. If you want to be able to use 2nd gear you need to do a 1st gear lockout mod.

I thought that transmissions only burn themselves up if you do a power flush on one that hasnt had it done before? Besides burnt tranny fluid can cause some symptoms of a bad transmission. And to OP I believe its just regular Chrysler ATF, you can get it at autozone. Dexron is for the transfercase only. Also heres a chart for your plugs if you check them.
Well that too. I've seen both. When ever new fluid is introduced weather it be full flush or a screen; its a risk.
Its def not ur brakes. especially with rpm jumpin around andthe fluid being burnt up. iwould just get another tranny and be done with it.

What happens when i Get a tranny and put er' in and that does not solve my problem? How exactly can slippage in the tranny make my motor bog down anyway? I'm not questioning that the tranny is what is causing it im just wondering how and why.
