#11 fuze keeps blowing

Default #11 fuze keeps blowing

The number 11 fuze on my kick panel keep blowing when I have my xj in four wheel drive. Cruising on the road it won’t do it but under high load it will blow such as going up a rock or on a big hill. Any help? Can someone tell me what to check or where to look?

What year XJ are we dealing with? 4.0 Auto, Manual?

So that fuse should be a ignition fed 20A fuse. It feeds the PCM (power control module), TCM (transmission control module), ASD relay (automatic shut down relay) and fuel pump relay. I can't see any relation to 4WD but it could be that you only stress whatever it blowing the fuse while in 4WD, and it woudl also blow if in 2WD in the same situation.

The only thing you could unplug and try to see if it does it again is the TCM which is found on the back of the lower dash panel above the passenger footwell. Everything else on that circuit will stop the Jeep from running if unplugged. I'm pretty sure it'll throw a fault code at you which will need to be cleared when the TCM is unplugged. If you choose to try it, you will need to use the shifter in 1-2 for 1st, 3 for 3rd and D for 4th.

The only other suggestion I can think of would be to check all of the wiring harness around the engine bay for any rubbing.

Well, Fuse 11 feds the ASD relay as well as provide a fused ignition switch output to the PCM and your fuel pump relay.

You mention high load. Does it do it in 4wd on a flat road? What about high loads in 2wd? Just trying to figure if it's related to any kind of twisting/flexing possibly contacting some bared wires.

I had just found out that it will only do it when the engine is hot or the 4 wheel drive has been used for a bit. And yes I also figured out it will do it on a flat road. No it does not blow the fuze in 2 wheel drive.

I just figured out it will only do it when either the engine is hot or 4 wheel drive has been used for a while. Like I said it won’t do it in 2 wheel drive only in 4 wheel.

I tried unplugging the tcm and it did the same thing when I put it in 4 wheel drive

In that case I'm not too sure as nothing listed on that circuit should pull much power. A possibility is that someone previously has attached a new wire into that circuit to feed something else which is causing the trip. For reference if you look into this, the wire is 18 gauge Dark Blue/White.

As far as I know, electroncially the only thing that links 4WD to the Jeep is a switch to throw on a dash light which is on a different fused circuit

to be honest im a bit confused about what you had just told me and I appreciate your help. I’m going to a garage today and spend a few days to take a few things apart and search. I will reply here what was wrong incase anyone has a similar problem. If I haven’t replied I haven’t fixed it haha.
