1988 AW4 transmission whining in 1st gear
Just bought a Cherokee with the 4.0 and AW4 auto transmission. It's in excellent shape after sitting in a garage for 10 years. Engine runs fine. The transmission seems to have one glitch though. In reverse and 1st gear only, when I accelerate from a standing start, there is a noticeable whine. As soon as it shifts to second it disappears and is not present in any other gear. When rolling to a stop and it downshifts into 1st, it starts again. Shifting is fine, nice and smooth. Logic tells me it is not a bearing or it would be the same in any gear, right? So, has anyone run into this issue and if so what was the culprit? I just finished installing a new filter and fluid and a little seafoam trans med. I also used AT+4 which I am now hearing is not the best to run in the transmission although that was in the manual. So, I will be switching to Dexron III. But, the noise was there before and I have only taken it around the block a few times so, I am ruling that out and it will be changed.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I want to start enjoying this XJ without worrying about doing harm to tranny.
