Hello I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. The rear brake back plate is shot. I need to replace it only problem is every where I call they say it has been discontinued, I have tried all the wreckers in my area. I even payed to post the part request so far no response. I live in Canada and this may be part of the reason I am having no luck at the Parts places here. I see Dorman makes an after market, But I cannot find any parts supplier here who can get it for me.

Would anyone here know a lot about the rear brake Back plate? Or who else makes the part?

Not sure if that's for your axle or not. Depends on Dana 35 or Dana 44.

I am not sure what the axle is how would I find out? I have had the Cherokee since new. But I know very little about mechanics. I am not the greatest at this forum stuff either I am kinda just trying to post in the right place and all that.

I know it is a 4 liter staight six motor and my Laredo came with selec trac.

What's the diameter of your rear drum?

 

That's a great site. It's where I found the parts to fix my rear wiper. I found the motor at a local parts store but, nobody had the plastic bezel that the washer hose mounts to.

I tried factorychryslerparts they did not have the part. They sent me an email with a phone number to TheJeep.com.I spoke to a very helpful gentleman who informed me I most likely have a Dana 35. Only problem is the Backing plate is no longer in production and I will have to try and find a used one.

I have been trying the used market for a few days now, and so far I have not had any luck.

Thanks to all who have tried to help and if anyone knows of a used Backing plate for my Jeep please let me know.

 

I imagine some one would have already mentioned it, if there was a another way to replace this part. But would there be another make of car that would fit the Jeep?

If worst comes to worst could a disc brake conversion be done on a Dana 35? Just wondering. I have had this jeep since 1988 first time I have got stumped on a repair.

I also use to own a CJ 5 for 6 years. And I had a 1976 Jeep Grand Wagoneer for a couple years.

Jeeps they can drive a guy crazy.

Thanks 67 GMC. The part is on the way I have my fingers crossed it will fit. The fellow at Kelowna made me measure my brake shoes to make sure it is the right part.

I went to change the rear backing plate. The guy who is doing the work said it should be no big deal. He would have to remove the axle to get the old plate off and put the new part on. Anyway he opens the diff to remove the clips and finds the retaining bolt that has to be removed has been snapped off half way down the bolt hole. He has tried a few tricks but we can still not get that snapped retaining bolt out( so he can remove the retaining clips). Any one ever come across a problem like this and if so, how did you solve it?

This Jeep is starting to drive me crazy and I have already beat Brain Cancer and I do not want to let the Jeep beat me. I still like driving it.

He says it will be very hard to drill because of the location of the hole. We tried an extactor but it would not bite in enough.

I guess it will have to drilled out?

Any help would be appreciated.

 

If your rear axle is the original -88 D35 you not have any c-clips.
Just loosen the nuts on the backing plate and slide the the axle out sometimes it need a little pulling to get it out. So no need to take out any c-clips because there is no it the axle.
If they have put in an newer D35 ( -90 and up ) then you have to take out the c-clips.
