Default 1988 XJ Clutch Master Cylinder

My kid has a leaking clutch master cylinder that is dripping brake fluid on his foot. He is in a different state, a couple of days away drive at least. A mechanic "friend" says the entire transmission needs to be pulled to replace. Is this true? I would think and can certainly find just the replacement clutch master cylinder part to replace. No need to replace the slave cylinder as it dies seem to be working fine. He is currently keeping the reservoir full to prevent any further issues. Please let me know your thoughts. I did a search but can't find this specific problem. Thanks!

Sounds like his mechanic friend mis understood which hydraulic cylinder is leaking.

Yes. Master cylinder is mounted on the firewall.
It's also recommended to replace the hose from the master to the slave cylinder.

Just as Cruiser says, not hard to replace other than the need for long arms if doing it yourself with a bolt head on one side of the firewall and nut on the other. Replacing the hose as stated is a good idea, I have had one go and not fun when away from home. Make sure they bleed the system well. One thing he should be careful about is fluid dripping on the fuse block will start to destroy the plastic and cause electrical issues (don't ask how I know this!).
