1989 cherokee pioneer wont start
Hi everyone new guy here hope i am doing this right. I recently purchased a dirt cheap 1989 jeep cherokee. I noticed when we would turn the key off there was a second delay and it would turn off. I took the O2 sensor out cause it is bad and went to back it up in the shop it started and i moved it. Went to restart and it wont do nothing. CHecked single green wire at starter and no power to it. I was gonna check the connector at the bottom of the column to see if its ignition switch but i am unsure which wire would be the one that i should try ? does anybody have any ideas ? Also i have the 1989 jeep manual but it does not have a electric diagram in it. Does the chilton manual have electric diagram ?
Thanks for y'all time

Filling out your info helps. Welcome BTW!
If you hold the key over, and jiggle the shifter in park or neutral and it starts, it's your NSS. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/
Somewhere in my signature link there is a link to wiring diagrams.

Sorry I didn't say all the info to diagnose. It is a automatic and I tried jiggling it before I turned the key but not while I was cranking. I looked at the wiring diagram in your signature DFlintsone and I will try following the wire from the starter. Do I have to take the column apart to test the ignition switch or is it at the bottom of the column ?

Yeah I tested green wire at starter and was not sure where it went from there but appears that I need to check starter relay and see if I am getting power there. Oh and my 16 yr old went outside and it started right up !!!! ugh nothing like trying to fix something that wont stay broke !!!

No asd relay on a Renix. (it looks like the fuel pump relay handles that stuff)..
The green wire goes to the start relay by the battery. Freedgr mentioned the taillights because the NSS controls them also. I had meant HOLD the key over on start while you jiggle the shifter. If the NSS is gummy or mal-adjusted that might do it.
I forget which of the two greens on the relay go to the solonoid, but you should be able to jump it right there. (make sure it's in park!)

Well after spending some time messing with the jeep I traced it around to start relay and was bound and determined to say that was the problem. ( Was not starting at this time) But I jiggled the shifter like yall DFlintstone suggested and I figured out I could make it start and not start by playing with the shifter. so do yall think its out of adjustment or is it going bad ? It would start in neutral and not in park but if I put some pressure on it in park it would start.

That is suggestive for your NSS (neutral safety switch) being the culprit. You can try cleaning it or put a new one one. Do a search, plenty of threads on cleaning, inlcuding pics.

I just "live", with mine. If I park it hot, it will start next time. If I just re-park it cold it often sticks and I need to giggle/(push on), the shifter. Probably since I rarely notice my reverse lights working I could just adjust my NSS. If I did anything, I'd try adjusting first.
If you can tease yours off without wrecking it, you can clean it and be good to go. Squirt it a day ahead with PB or liquid wrench or something.
There are "tricks" for removing the NSS without wrecking it. I guess if you can wedge behind it, then tap IN on the shaft you might tease it off. One poster mentioned using wood. I'd think if it was wood, very hard wood would help getting a "crisp" tap on it.
Here's some links:

That last '4x4' is a good one.
For adjusting, just turning it so you have both start and reverse lights might be the ticket!

I like your way of thinking DFlintstone with living with it. How long have you been living with it. I just don't feel like spending the money on a nss switch right now. I need to put a fuel pump on it cause the check valve is letting fuel go back in tank and making it take extra long to start. Also need to replace a bad o2 sensor. So I will let the NSS switch be for now. Thanks for yalls help

I happen to have a pretty messed up 02 sensor thread. Right on top is a link to eco mikes info which makes more sense!

Also I think my fuel pressure drop was an injector or two. When I'd start after 5 minutes or so of being parked hot, it would miss a few beats like maybe a cyl or two was flooded. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/199...r-swap-163105/
