Default 1989 cherokee wont stay running

Ok so im at my wits end here. My jeep will start and run every once and a while and it runs great when it runs. If I get lucky and it starts and I shut it off it will not start back up. It will just rev then die. Once it fires if keep the starter on and give it gas it will rev higher and seems like it wants to run but when shut the starter of it dies. starter relay? I have replaced the fuel pump/filter and regulator, also the CPS. Any imput will be apreciated

i don't remember what its called but i'd check it... pull it out and bring it by the parts store and see if they can name it... i know when they go bad they can give your jeep some funny running/non running symptoms.

Jeep Guy has a point. It's, easy and harmless to bypass that ballast resistor for a check. It gets battery voltage at the front and sends a little less out the rear, only to quiet the pump a little. That wire powering the pump there needs to be hot for it to run.

I'm curious if there is any black smoke or sign's it's flooding.

Also some trivia. I believe the fuel pump relay get's grounded (to activate it), first by cranking it , then when the ECM gets the signal from the CPS that it's running.

With your renix, knowing your CPS is working well is always a good start. I once did this test CRUISER wite's up here in 3 minutes. Also you might want to double check that CPS connector. Intermittent like yours is makes that sound promising.

C/O CRUISER ;

Renix CPS Testing and Adjusting

Renix CPSs have to put out a strong enough signal to the ECU so that it will provide spark.
Most tests for the CPS suggest checking it for an ohms value. This is unreliable and can cause some wasted time and aggravation in your diagnosis of a no-start issue as the CPS will test good when in fact it is bad.
The problem with the ohms test is you can have the correct amount of resistance through the CPS but it isn’t generating enough voltage to trigger the ECU to provide spark.
Unplug the harness connector from the CPS. Using your voltmeter set on AC volts and probing both wires in the connector going to the CPS, crank the engine over. It won’t start with the CPS disconnected.
You should get a reading of .5 AC volts.
If you are down in the .35 AC volts range or lower on your meter reading, you can have intermittent crank/no-start conditions from your Renix Jeep. Some NEW CPSs (from the big box parts stores) have registered only .2 AC volts while reading the proper resistance!! That’s a definite no-start condition. Best to buy your CPS from Napa or the dealer.
Sometimes on a manual transmission equipped Renix Jeep there is an accumulation of debris on the tip of the CPS. It’s worn off clutch material and since the CPS is a magnet, the metal sticks to the tip of the CPS causing a reduced voltage signal. You MAY get by with cleaning the tip of the CPS off.
A little trick for increasing the output of your CPS is to drill out it’s mounting holes with the first drill bit that just won’t fit through the original holes. Then, when mounting it, hold the CPS down as close to the flywheel as you can while tightening the bolts.

I might also throw out the idea of the O2 sensor

I know when I was testing sensors, when ever I had my MAP sensor unplugged. The jeep would crank, rev, and die. Are you getting volts to your map?

A Renix will go into default mode with a faulty oxygen sensor and you probably wouldn't even know it was bad except for a slightly rough/low idle.

My 87 had a rough idle and would die unless I gave it gas. Ended up being my O2
