Note from DJ
The build date is 9-90 which makes it an early 91 which matches this information below.

So the year for an auto doesn't start in January? If not which month is it? This would make buying parts a real crap shoot! It's at a JY...I didn't check the glovebox for registration. I'd think it matches the sticker.

A 1991 can be built prior to 1991 if that's what this question is about (sept 1990 would be a 1991). Just like you can buy a 2018 vehicle in the fall of 2017. Model year doesn't have to correspond to date of manufacture.

Maybe you're asking about the engine? It doesn't look like a Renix from the channel cover along the valve cover, the intake manifold stuff and the lack of a pressurized coolant overflow bottle. It's also missing the DRBII J10 connector for the diagnostic connection.

10th digit in the VIN is M. That's 1991. L is 1990.

Manufacturers usually start building next year's cars in June or July.......

So if you have the wrong part and your month is after mid year, try the one from the previous year.

That (originally nice looken) Jeep was at the JY because he couldn't pass smog. Gotta wonder what parts he was throwing at it! (maybe next time I'm there I'll see how many wires on the 02 sensor)

Hey, thanks DJ, way better than the one I used. > https://www.cherokeeforum.com/vindecoder.php
vin=1J4FJ58S7ML520057

Leather seats?! I need to go have another look at that, and maybe see what he has for an 02 sensor. Suspicious the year being a trick didn't help at all getting it past CA smog. I could see getting angry and frustrated with the "piece of it", when nothing matched or worked, then throwing in the towel. Heck, if he put a three wire 02, (in that 4 wire Jeep), I'll grab it, is probably new.

Never once in my life have I decoded my VIN before buying parts.

Manufacture year begins at the beginning of the 3rd quarter of the year for automakers.

So.. June 1990 would be a 1990 build. July 1990 is a 1991 build.

Having owned a few of these I learned quickly when ordering parts to order a year ahead or behind on them.

Enjoy your very early HO!

Build sheet: http://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/B...FJ58S7ML520057

Fun Fact: It was purchased by American Coin Merchandising--an arcade game company-- as a fleet vehicle, and all their jeeps shared a common key.

Came with P265 70 R18 tires and 15" aluminum rims. Unless my knowledge of tire size is very wrong something there doesn't add up, like about 3".

Yea, huh. Rear fascia skid plate, (whatever that is), an extra 9 gallons, rack n pinion steering. Horse of another color.

Diskman, maybe I should have grabbed it when it came in. Story is he junked it cuz it wouldn't smog. Now it's done, I just got the fan shroud. I had gone there to get the radiator with both the bung for the fan switch and a cap, but too late. Now seeing the build sheet I want to go have a better look at those leather seats.
