I have a 1991 XJ that I noticed the dash lights stopped coming on. When I pull my headlight switch out I have dash lights and tail lights then the breaker trips and I have no dash, tail, or stop lights. All I have is turn signals and headlights. No 4-way lights either the tail lights and dash lights come on for a second and then blow out. I took out every bulb and even with them out it still does it. Any ideas?

 

First place to look is out back.

See if there's a trailer wiring harness that's been cobbled together back there.

 

I took out all of the rear tail light bulbs and disconnected the trailer lights from the left side tail. I also cut out the left tail/stop socket because it was carotid. Same thing. When I pull my headlights the breaker trips. I going to replace the pigtail that I cut out and get a new headlight and stoplight switch. Also will unravel the trail light wires like you suggested. Hopefully, I find a short.

 

Breaker or fuse? Does this reset on it's own or are you replace a blown fuse, and which one? Stop lights and dash lights are not on the same fuse. I think this could be a grounding issue.

 

I tooknout the breaker that says Guages under the dash. Replaced headight switch. Still blowing that bbreaker.waiting fir a stop light switch.
