The 242 is in!

woohoo!!!!

...but i can't celebrate yet, its still on the lift - my neighbor and i just installed it

the donor 242 came off a 95 grand cherokee - not much detail on tags.

when we lifted it the first time, it didn't line up, 2nd time it didn't line up

...so we used a caliber and measured all the diameters - then counted the splines on both transfer cases... 23 on the donor, and ... 23 on the original 249 - whata relief

3rd attempt it slid right on with little yoke twist and whalah!

that's where its at for now - the original speed sensor is on the 242 but it looks the same. Now all i need to do is modify the shift indicator via the junk yard.

its in 2wd at the moment until i make appropriate tunings - whatever they may be.

Default Viscous Clutch failure and rehab

I put ATF-4 with some Lucas oil transmission fix in my quadra-trac transfer case hoping it would loosen up the VC - FAIL

I learned that ONLY - MOPAR'S VISCOUS CLUTCH OIL SHOULD GO IN THESE TRANSFER CASES, and the stuff is BLACK not RED.

my neighbor tossed me a bottle of it so i saw it exists - I call this guy the CAR PSYCHIC. but his forte is in transmission/drivetrain work. I listen to his wisdom knowing it exceeds my knowledge.

but since we're all still very human and we all have our dumb moments which we shake our heads at and wonder "why did i do that" - I never have expectations - then i'm never let down - i do the best repair i can and if i fail well i know its not the problem - misdiagnosing something sucks.... I replaced my already replaced CV joints when it was the Viscous Clutch (VC vs CV) that was making the illusion happen - it sounded like bad ***** in the CV sack - but wasn't!

anywho... the the 242 is in - I'm eating lunch - test it out later, we'll see how it goes

i want to hit 300, 000 on this 93 grand!

remember, it's not just the shift indicator that has to be swapped...your shift gate on the shifter handle is still for a 249, meaning it will be hard to find the proper location for which selection you're in. gotta swap the handle, too.

Default test drive success

Success!

242 is an awesome and affordable improvement over replacing the VC in the 249.

the 242 i found was a direct replacement - it "dropped right in" without any input shaft swapping.

NEXT:
I will address the shift gate & handle scenario - hopefully with ease, right now its in 2wd and the linkage is tied up with some wire until i find the parts at the yard tomorrow.

p.s. side note - sounds like planetary gears in transmission might have worn needle bearings - i hear a strange soft buzzing from the transmission. I'm told its an easy job but the labor will not - i.e. dropping the trans and taking it apart.

lol - after this - my 93 will have everything upgraded or repaired except the original I6 engine };-.)>

...and i'm considering rear disk conversion from the stock drum brakes - any effect on ABS system?

by going to discs, you'll be eliminating the abs.

excellent, well its a wrap (more like warp)

i just finished the linkage adjustments and completed the 4lo mud test as well as the 4hi mud tests. all 5 settings are easy to get into

4lo is awesome - you're in a 50/50 lock before you have a chance to slip

and the 2wd is going to take driveline wear to minimum - ideal for dry summer roads

i pulled out the bezel parts and i'm going to put a black leather boot around the handle/lever - I have visual on the VIC if its in lo or no... perks of an OEM swap - no rewiring.

awesome - i love jeeps

we'll find out - i'm going to try getting that set from an newer zj - eye spied a set at the yard that looked clean and i saw the ABS sensor on it - I wondered where the cable went and if i would need to take the ABS unit out of engine compartment.

...i'm thinking on it - but i'm going to beat on my drums this winter with the destination A/T's i just ordered - Always liked those tires - i had them on the 5.9 when i first got it - they plowed through 3 feet of snowy dirt trails... and displayed lots of grip at 70mph on a packed snowy highway - haven't had a tire do that since.

...does anyone know what the biggest tire size is that will fit and not rub too much. Jeep has no lift.

30" is pushing it. put wj lower control arms on it, and it shouldn't rub...much.

I'd say 29's to be happy.

I've got 245x70x16's on my '97 ZJ w/the Up Country suspension package (1"-1&1/2" over normal height.). That's like a 29.5" x 9.5". They barely touch the LCA's when turned full lock as in parking. No rubbing otherwise.

I have a question about a 242j transfer case..figured this would be a good thread to ask. I am looking to replace my tc and a lot of sites/businesses are asking if it's the police package or not...how do I know?
