Default 1993 Jeep Cherokee Laredo..Toyota transmission?

My uncle has a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. Recently he's been having some transmission problems where the engine starts fine but after a mile or so the Jeep just stops and won't move. Turn off the engine, wait a few minutes and it will go another mile or so and stop. I called a transmission mechanic and he thought maybe it was a clogged transmission fluid filter but will not work on it unless it is a Chrysler transmission. How do I know if this 1993 Jeep Cherokee Laredo has the Toyota or Chrysler transmission?

If its an automatic, it'll be an AW4. Its a fine transmission and they're all over in XJ's.

You can swap in a new one from a 92-96 and everything will match up.

Need to nail down a more definite reason as to why it is not working.

The auto trans, aw4(aisen warner) transmission, is a toyota transmission. If your 93 is an auto, it has this trans. If its a 5 speed, its an ax15, not sure who that is made by.

The aw4 was used in Toyota Supras, among other vehicles, it was just called something a bit different.

Its made by Asin Warner (Prolly butchered the first name). So, if I'm not mistaken, it's neither Chrysler or Toyota. Any reputable trans shop should know this already.

That's like someone saying our d30s, d35s, and d44s aren't Jeep axles because they are made by Dana/Spicer.

4.0L gas automatic is the Aisin-Warner AW-4 automagic. A nearly identical version named the A340 was in Supras and minor variations in a lot of other vehicles.
4.0L gas manual is the Aisin-Warner AX-15. Used in Dodge and Toyota trucks as well as Jeeps.
2.5L gas automatic have the junk Chrysler 32RH
2.5L gas manual is the Aisin-Warner AX-5

(well, since about 1990 anyway)

Aisin-Warner was a joint venture between the Japanese Aisin Seiki and American BorgWarner. Toyota has a 30% stake in Aisin.

I guess the AW4 is kinda too long to make it an easy trans. The AW4 I'm stuffing under my wife's TJ with JeepCoMJ is a pain. Gonna have a real short shaft, probably going to need 2 extreme angle joints, one on each end.

Wow that sounds like quite the project. With such a short wheel base I imagine body lifts make a lot of sense

It will be. Using XJ ecu, tcu, etc. I'm not that great at wiring, but the bolt on stuff is easy.

I'm not a fan of body lifts. Its got a 2" spacer lift right now.

Then they replaced it in 03 with the 42RLE "Ultra-Drive" which is even worse.
