1993 XJ Idiot Lights to Gauges
Want to get away from the idiot lights and go to gauges, would love to use a stock dash cluster (ebay has one for a "1993" it said) but could just add Volt, temp and oil to a pod or new cluster.
Anyone do a swap out? Wonder if factory plug in would work, thought AI would start here instead of just adding new units.
Thanks Jeff

A gauge cluster swap is simple. I have done it myself, and it takes about an hour. The only components that you will have to change are the coolant temp sensor and the oil pressure sensor. The sensor that came with the cluster with warning lights just act as a switch. The sensors that are marked for "gauge" are variable to read pressure and temperature.
It was a plug and play swap for me, as far as in the dash. Any cluster from 91-96 should fit.

One of the best mods I've done on my 99.... I think any car/truck company should be ashamed of themselves for even thinking to use Idiot lights in the dash cluster on a vehicle.

I agree with you, but if you look at most of the cars today, some of them only have idiot lights except for gas and temp.
Personally, I always liked my dad's 78 dodge W200. He had ALL the aux gauges. Speedometer, fuel, temp, oil pressure, ammeter, volt gauge, vacuum, and tach.

Plus...it helps their "planned obsolescence" agenda quite well.... honestly they don't want people keeping their older vehicles on the road that long...b/c then they can't sell you a new one.
...lol... they probably despise all of us XJ owners...if it breaks... we love our jeeps and will fix them ourselves to keep them on the road and trails.

Kinda grew up in the time of idiot lights, my dad was a mechanic and I followed his footsteps and still at it. Learned to scan the dash every fifteen minute if that, still do it today, but always installed gauges fairly quickly in my diesels and other rigs. Running out of room on my XJ and look forward in the next weeks of converting!
