1994 Jeep Cherokee,Auto, 4.0L No Starter cranking
Have an issue with no starter cranking.
So far, checked the starter. Tested bad so have a new one. Was under warranty from AZ. Battery was suspicious but went thru the circuit to see if getting power to the relays, then to starter. Pulled the Starter relay and checked it with a regular 9V battery. It switched. So went to checking the starter relay at the power box. Pulled the relay, with key off, 12V across the load contacts as should be. Needs the coil to switch. No relay in it so no electric flow. Turn key on and have 4.6Volts across the coil contacts. Appears that the ECU sends 5 volts to the coil to activate it? Is that right. My battery was at 11.5volts due to being old and being used to check circuits last night. I have a Brand new battery I can hook up and see if it is the Cranking amps that is the issue. But does anyone know if it is 5V from the ECU computer that goes to the coil? Or do I have an issue with low output voltage from the ECU computer to the coil side of the relay? It may be that the starter relay is weak if it supposed to be at 5V and I jammed 9V thru to test it . Then it would be a higher voltage than needed and a weak coil section?

Other threads talked about ASD relay and other relays? Could they be involved?

Anyone out there can suggest?
How do you test the NSS ( Neutral Safety Switch) if that is the problem?

Easiest way to see if it's the nss is to see if you have reverse lights. See if it starts in neutral, try wiggling the shifter to see if that makes it crank

THANK YOU. Tried the wiggling and starting in neutral, No crank still. But the reverse lights? I'll try that now.

Just tried the reverse lights. Put in Reverse gear, and no reverse lights on. So probably it's the NSS switch. Now where is it? I have 2WD Automatic, shift on the floor, not the column. And its a 4 speed Auto. Shifter reads D,3, 1-2. So it's 4 speed? Is it the simple switch or the entire harness. Expensive bugger at $200 if it's the full harness., May pull it apart to try to repair it?

Thanks SV, I'd appreciate it if you would look up the jumping. On the floor, it must be the harness. Thinking about going to the yard and take theirs apart to see how and where it's mounted. Assume in the center console.

Took a look under at the trans to see if I recognize the NSS unit. Yep, I have the 4 speed auto trans and the Expensive $200 harness. Not the simple button. I'll have to go thru a check on the harness. Haynes has the resistance check for the switch but doesn't tell me where the connector is hidden. I assume under the center console. Do that tonight. I'm stuck in the driveway with the jeep but would like to start it and move it into the garage. That HOA crap. Can I do something to bypass that NSS? Or start it to move it.? Wondering if it would continue to run if can jump the starter?

Got the jeep to start and moved it into the garage. I shook the bleep out of the shifter back and forth. Put in Reverse, turned the key. Put in 1-2, then 3, tried to start each time. Then slammed it to Park. And tried. Started. Moved in the garage so I can work on it. Tried to start. Dead again. So probably that NSS switch. And mine is the expensive harness to the trans one. How to debug it now and maybe repair it? Try cleaning contacts etc and try it.
other advice or how to jump the wiring until I get a new or rebuilt one? Be appreciated.

I can't find my diagram but mine was a 2wd my nss problem started when I made it a 4wd. It's the two wires in the middle of the back of the connector (opposite side of the locking tab) just jump the wires together to complete the park/neutral circuit (do it on the nss side of the connector in case you ever decide to get one), plug it back in, the jeep will think it's always in park/neutral so it'll start. On a side note after I jumped it my reverse lights started working.

Thanks. Mine is a 4 spd auto trans. Has the larger NSS, guess called a Starter Solenoid sensor.
Mine looks like this one fron AZ.

Mine is the expensive switch. $450 dealer, $200 auto parts. $175 plus shipping some on line parts places. I may see what it takes to bypass the switch. Haynes manual has a series of tests for it. Not a simple one button switch.
Now that I have it in the garage, I can be more free with working on it. I will get back to it tonight. I stopped at the Jeep dealer here and spoke with one of the service guys who loves the old jeeps like mine. He has one. He said the connector to the harness is under the center console. So I will be taking that apart tonight to get to it. Probably just need to clean it up. Had a lot of oil sprayed all over when had that oil filter adapter leaking a LOT of oil. Coated the underside pretty good. If it started well enough, I'd hose off the bottom after spraying degreaser.
Man, gotta win the lotto and get myself my own garage bay set up. I wish.

Thanks on the jumping part. I missed that post. Be working on it later. Thanks. I'll post back, good or bad or resolved.
Wish everybody posted end results. Helps us all.

Forgot to ask, is 14 ga or 16 ga ok for the jumper out.? Should I try to back probe jumper wire it?

Mine looks the same as yours, hence why I jumped it instead of replacing it. The connector for it isn't under the center console, it's mounted to the passenger side of the trans with a 7/8 or so nut runs up to the connector mounted to the fire wall right side of the engine, jump it just before the connector nss side

Thanks a bunch. I'll be doing it in the morning,. I planned to tackle it tonight but well, too tired. I appreciate clearing up where the connector is. I'll trace up from that NSS to the connector.
