Why not try to fix the problem rather then by passing it. If you by pass it you wont have any reverse lights. Here's a link the shows you how to clean and repair your NSS.

Thanks. I was going to do that, maybe at a later date. SV says he has reverse lights.

Thanks for the caution. If I bypass it, then at a later date, remove and repair, no problem then? I may take a chance and pull one out of a salvage yard. Check it, clean it, and then be sure have one to put back in if break the thing on mine. Of course, if not too much $ at the yard. Sometimes not much cheaper at those places.

Has anyone done the cleanup of this NSS? Looks pretty simple to do. Looks like the Hardest part is getting the bugger out from underneath with the pipe in the way. And mine has a lot of oil coating from that oil filter adapter leaking a while ago. No rust with the amount of oil coated underneath.
I'm going to practice in the junkyard and take it out. Buy it, clean it up and use it for a back up.

sv41878: I can't find my diagram but mine was a 2wd my nss problem started when I made it a 4wd. It's the two wires in the middle of the back of the connector (opposite side of the locking tab) just jump the wires together to complete the park/neutral circuit (do it on the nss side of the connector in case you ever decide to get one), plug it back in, the jeep will think it's always in park/neutral so it'll start. On a side note after I jumped it my reverse lights started working.
I got this from a friend on the connector. Is it the B and C (in red) connections- But on the NSS harness? I'm going to jumper it using those tap in connectors that fold over. Then I can either pull it later and repair or replace it as you suggested.

Worked on it a bit today. First tried to start it again. It did. Started in N too. Then back in Park. Did start. Went thru the gears with the motor off. Once again, won't start in P or N. Off and on again whether it would start on N or P. Battery is weak so connected up a new 24F battery with cables. No start. Jumped the connector by back probe with a paperclip formed to shape. Shoved it in back side. Starts every time in P and N. No reverse lights. So you nailed it with the NSS switch. Be at the junkyard tomorrow and pull the one I saw there friday. Open it up and clean it up. Pull mine, clean it up too after I have a replacement. Worried about breaking it. Worth the few bucks for the part. Thanks. I'll tape up the connector until then.

I only skimmed the comments thus far but saw things about removing the center console, etc. Don't do that, it's unnecessary.
You'll find the harness plug for the NSS near the dip stick in the engine bay. If it's never been removed before (or was and was actually reinstalled properly) then there will be several zip ties connecting the NSS side wire loom to other wires, hoses, and bundles. These are the only wires connecting your NSS to your Jeep. You'll have to cut those zip ties and feed the plug down through the engine bay along the firewall in order to remove the NSS. I recommend spraying the NSS with PB Blaster or other penetrating oil as many times as possible before attempting to remove. It will better your chances of success.
You have the Aisin Warner AW4 automatic transmission. Virtually all automatic XJs have this transmission. Rebuilding the NSS is simple but depending on what type of abuse the undercarriage of your Jeep has been exposed to, getting it off is not as simple.
My personal favorite NSS rebuild write-up is this one by GoJeep but there are many out there.
I've developed my own technique for one man alignment.
1. With the NSS rebuilt and installed but not fully torqued, set the parking brake and chock the tires, turn the key to ON (don't start the engine) and place the transmission in R.
2. From under the transmission, rotate the NSS until the reverse lights illuminate. It's best if you're backed up to a wall or something that will reflect the glow of the reverse lights when they come on.
3. Continue past that point until they go out again.
4. Place the NSS half-way between when they came on and went off and tighten the adjustment bolt.
Using the alignment indication etched into the NSS housing is, in my experience, unreliable.
