Default 1995 Jeep Cherokee Not Getting to Operating Temp. in Cold Weather

I have a 1995 Jeep XJ that when I drive when the temps are below 40 degrees only gets the engine temp gauge needle to get to the 1st quarter mark. When it is warm out the jeep will climb up to operating temp and hold there unless it is super hot out when it will climb a tad past operating temperature but never in the red. Is this an issue, and if so, Is this an issue with the thermostat or do I need a new coolant sensor? Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds to me like a stuck open thermostat. I’d imagine your heat sucks aswell.

I think on a 95 the sensor that feeds the dash is not on the thermostat housing like my 00’

when running in cold Temperature what do the radiator hoses feel like after running for a few minutes? If they’re not hot and you can feel water running through them then your gauge is probably good and your thermostat is stuck open.

if your not the original owner and it’s always done this it may not have a thermostat.

not running at above 170ish will cause it to always run rich and effect fuel economy at a minimum.

On another thread I posted the thermostat and cap I found. It's a long one so scroll down to near the end. And that place is less expensive than my Jeep dealer by a little, even after shipping.

Thanks. I will give that a try. The heat works but it could be warmer. I will do the hose test tomorrow and see how that goes. As far as thermostats go for a replacement. Mopar?

Yes, here is easier:

And I just noticed that the temperature is not listed. Mine isn't here yet, so you should email them and double check that its a 195F, not 180F.

Just checked Rock Auto for both 1995 and 1996, no MOPAR thermostats listed in my search. Forgot the make I got a while back when I changed my radiator, but it opened too soon when I tested it in hot water. I used a Murray unit from O'Reilly, which appeared to open at 195 when tested, but in use it was opening too early too. I put my old factory 1996 thermostat back in and it works fine. Just ordered the one above to have for when/if my original fails.

Thermostat is the same on all the 4.0s. Don't let the online catalogs screw you up.
