What does he mean by rust? Surface rust or Large holes? Surface rust can be taken care of no problem while holes need to be patched up.

Ya so you are going to have to cut away the rust and patch the areas. Personally I wouldnt touch a XJ with that much rust.

Cut out the rockers and weld in some 2x2 square tube for rockers/rock rails and go wheel it!

Jeeptech is right alot of guys are cutting out the rockers and putting 2x2 bow tubing in the void and tieing them in as rock rails. Looks sharp too.

i paid 1500 for my 95 and the rockers were 1/2 missing due to rust, and hardly needed to cut anything off after grinding. mine came with replacement rockers so i welded in some 1x1 and ive high centered several times w/o a problem. it really wasnt hard, my buddy welded them in and i herculined them in less than 4 hours...

Pretty much par for the course up here in the rust belt. If it's JUST the rockers, I wouldn't be concerned. If the rust has rotted out the B or C pillar or the floor boards, I'd be much more cautious. See if you can't get it for a nickle--point out that a new set of rockers is $100 plus labor. I think it would be a good buy for $500.
