1995 XJ Clearing Engine Codes
Working on an issue and concerned I may be reading an old code so I need to know ......
1) Is disconnecting the battery for an hour enough to clear the code?
2) Will the codes normally clear themselves after ..... problem has been repaired AND the vehicle has gone through a certain number of start/run cycles.
We had a distributor changed back on October 1, 2014 and now are having a crank/no start problem when vehicle is warmed up. When stone cold it starts up like a champ.
Codes showing were 1 2 and 5 4
1 2 we ignored - battery changed
5 4 points to distributor pickup coil/sensor
THANKS

Well this is interesting ......
Last night we cleared all the codes by disconnecting the battery.
Reran the test and it gave two codes, which are normal.
1,2 Battery Disconnect
5,5 End Of Test
Cleared and gone was the 5,4
So in an effort to further test and duplicate the failure that caused us to troubleshoot we could not duplicate it at this time.
It was a situation where the 95 XJ would crank but no start when engine warm/hot. When stone cold it fired right up.
We did install a new distributor almost three months ago and I though maybe the 5,4 code was related to that old problem.
But I read that with 50 or so starts the code would clear themselves after a problem was repaired.
We we fired up the XJ after clearing the codes, let it idle for 5 - 10 minute to get up to temp and shut it down. Tired to restart and it started like a champ.
Then we ran it another 5 - 10 minutes constantly changing engine speed to simulate being driven around. Shut it down and attempted to restart with success.
Repeated this process several times and each time it restarted successfully.
I guess all I can do not is wait for it to fail again, run diags and see what code comes back.
Was gonna throw a CPS at it until I pulled that 5,4 code initially which indicates the pickup coil/sensor in the distributor.
If it fails again and 5,4 comes back, it's a distributor related issue ..... if 5,4 does not come back I guess we look at the CPS.
