Ok so I bought this jeep 2 years ago. When I bought it, it had an aftermarket stereo, the sound bar speakers in the back are not plugged in, and it has a rockford fosgate 4600x amp in it. So yesterday I was messing with the amp and I noticed one of the plugs was not in, so I tried to plug it in to the only open spot. When I did that it made a spark and now no sound plays out of my speakers. I'm thinking a fuse blew in the amp but I don't know how to fix it or if I can. Any help appreciated.

 

Does the amp still have power?

 

well from the amp and just the sounds of it, it looks like that is a 4 channel that goes to door speakers and such and not to a set of subs or anything. I havent seen this exact amp but it should have a fuse in the side of the amp, i would check that one. What is the place where you put the wire labeled, and how big was the wire that you plugged in?

Well anyways i would check the fuse in the amp if it has one, you should have a fuse block somewhere under the hood or somewhere along the wire coming from the battery to the amp. I would check that. It could be anything from a bus fuse *cylinderical* or your normal fuse *flat, square* That is all i can really think of that would cause all of your speakers to stop working.

 

The light on the amp doesn't turn on. So I don't think so.

Anyways, the one I plugged in was a black thick wire which I think was Ground wire. The wire is hooked into a screw on the car. I honestly can't remember which one i plugged it into but it made a spark when I did. I couldn't find a fuse in the amp, but i didn't take it apart.

 

There may be a fuse in the amp, but if its not getting power i would look for a fuse block first. They are usually a pretty big fuse. I have a preeeeeettty old JBL amp powerin my subs, and i dont think it has a fuse reachable without opening it. But if anything blew it would probably be the fuse in the amp because the fuse block is usually like at the least a 40 amp, my cousin has a 120 amp in his....that thing isnt gonna blow.

 

This is a really thick red wire connected to the amp on B+, so your saying there is a fuse block connected to one of the wires?

 

there SHOULD be, if there's not i would definitely put one in. And i think you get what im saying, but just in case, by fuse block i mean just a fuse holder that holds one fuse. Most people put the fuse block in the engine bay, what i would do is start at the battery, and follow it until you come across the fuse block....if you find it blew, then thats your problem, if its not or you dont find a fuse block (no guarantee the PO put one in) then its the fuse in the amp.

 

I opened up the amp and could not find a fuse in it. And I also could not find a fuse block or holder, but i'm not really sure what to be looking for. I am planning on getting a new amp, new speakers, and a sub anyways so I guess i'll have to just wait until then. Do you know of any place that will install the stuff for me? I looked at best buy and they charge like $70 just to install an amp, $70 for speakers, and $50 for a stereo.

 

honestly i would just do it myself if i were you. I installed my head unit, subs, and amp all by myself just kinda winging it cause i had no idea what i was doing, been hooking up stereos and such ever since.

The only thing you need to know if you want to put the head unit in yourself is if the stock wiring harness had an adapter put on it or if it was just hacked up like mine (which actually isnt that bad, all you do is match up wires) if it wasnt hacked up then all you need is an adapter for the new stereo and you plug it right in.
For the speakers, you just pull the covers, unscrew them, take off the wires, connect the wires to the new speakers, screw them back in, and put the cover back on.....very simple unless you get components...then its a little more complicated.
Honestly i would look at my door speakers and such before i replaced them. If they have a 4 channel on them (amp made to power highs) then theyre probably some pretty good speakers.

and i would say if theres already a 4 channel hooked up that all you would need to do to put in an amp for subs is change over the ground, power, remote wire, and rca jacks into the sub amp.


Ask around town if anybody local puts them in for people, my cousin puts together systems for people all the time, and definitely doesnt charge $200 and sometimes puts them in for free if they buy the stuff from him.
If you feel like doing it yourself, i can walk you through it. Its not really hard at all and im sure some of the other audio junkies on here could chime in and help too.

 

The speakers in the back side are infinity gold. Maybe I don't need to replace speakers. If I got a better amp would I be able to turn the volume up without it sounding bad? That would definitely be a lot cheaper.

 

so it sounds bad when you turn it up? i mean i would just look at the speakers and see what condition they are in. If they are infinitys and they are in good condition then i would keep them. As long as they sound good of course. My cousin has two sets of infinity kappas in his xj with a 4 channel on them and my ears hurt every time i get out of it....and i listen to my music pretty loud

 

One of the speakers in the front don't work, and the speakers on the sound bar aren't even connected. Not sure why.

 

are there not any wires run to them? or are they just disconnected in the back? i would say that your door speakers and the ones in the sound bar will sound great once theyre hooked up. Infinitys are CLEAR wish i had them in my heep

 

Well thats the reason I was messing with the amp in the first place, to try and plug the sound bar ones up. Anyway since I did not setup the sound system I'm not sure what wires go to which speakers etc etc..
