Exclamation 1996 Cherokee randomly stalls while stopped

So my issue is that my Jeep randomly stalls out when I’ve come to a stop.
It’s not at every stop so it seems very random.

Today after coming to a stop sign it stalled. I have to start my Jeep from the starter relay
so I have to get out and pop the hood to start it every time. After starting it (I have to rev it a lot)
I get back in the cab and when I step on the gas it will stall out. So I have to really rev it and then
it seems okay

It stalled again not long after when I came to the next stop light. After getting it started and getting to my destination I left it running.
The drive back home was okay except that I stalled again at another stop.

I’m seriously stumped and have no clue why. I replaced the TPS a few months ago cause that was causing issues.
I have yet to clean the IAC. I wanted to know what could be causing this issue cause it truly is random.

Is there anything else you may not be catching as far as symptoms? Does the jeep run good all the time - no issues, performs well no rough idle or exhaust leaks or anything? Is there any check engine codes at all before or after the stall out? All your fluid levels up to snuff? Can you pop your hood and wiggle the wiring around your starter/alternator/distributor and etc without issues?

you may want to look here.... https://cruiser54.com/

sounds like you have more than one issue.

I would suggest not buying a bunch of parts until you have no choice.

Take one item, complete it and then move on to another one.

You will be surprised at what is causing your issue.

How about some maintenance?

Ever clean the throttle body?

It has two minor exhaust leaks I can see.

The idle seems okay but I haven’t paid that much attention to it. My fluids are good as of this past summer.

It happened again on the way to work this morning (unfortunately I have to use it as my daily now).
The CEL came on and I have to crank the key 3 times to get the codes. I got 22 and 45.
22 is for voltage on the Coolant Temp Sensor. The previous owner added their own gauge and spliced in a sensor.
I can’t find anything on a code 45.

It does sound like it’s gonna start to stall when I wiggle wires around. There’s some wiring the previous owner did. So I wiggle that mass of wires.
I’ll have to try at the alternator and distributor.

Thank you. This looks like a gold mine

96 should have obd2, use a scantool to get the codes.

A time ago I was visiting my now wife at her college. 6hr drive one way and on the morning of making my way home the jeep wouldnt start, just cranked and cranked. Ran to the parts store several times that morning replacing everything tune up/spark related - not systematically eliminating anything i was just throwing my wallet at it till it finally fired up. Stopped for fuel twice on that trip home and never shut the jeep off in fear of repeating issue. Later the next week was manipulating the wires for some other reason i forget why and heard a relay clicking. This lead to wiggling wire loom while it was running and then finding bad sections of wiring that were killing the jeep. It was a simple fix really just replaced the section of harness with a junkyard section - it was all plug in so no soldering/butt connectors involved but it proved the point to wiggling wires if everything seems to be in ok and to still have random shutdowns

I’ve thought about getting a new portion of wiring harness. That’s something I definitely should do

I don’t have one that works. Somebody at my work has a Cherokee and a scantool that works I’ll use that

Do not totally discount failing ASD or fuel pump relays. They can be swapped with others in the PDC such as the A/C relay

Do not discount failing main cables

On my ld black XJ, it would drop all power for a few millisecs

One day, I pulled over on the side of the road for a **** at night, left it running, and noticed the lights went out when it did that

Hmm. I think my harness could be somewhat to blame

I saw someone else had a similar problem as me and the issue was the fuel pump.

Default Update

Bit of an update. When pressing the accelerator, there’s a delay and the RPMs will drop, and if you don’t stomp on the accelerator, it will stall.

Edit: Got a new code for the MAP sensor
