Default 1996 Liftgate Speaker Harness

I've got a 1996 XJ Country. It's a 4 door with electric windows and locks. It has a rear overhead speaker bar but no hatch speakers. After pulling the door panel off the liftgate, there is no speaker harness. Obviously I'm trying to install some. I have an extra set of overhead factory speakers that I would like to put in there, I'm not sure if they will fit or not, but I have to figure out the harness first. Does anyone have any info on this?

Default Speakers

Alright so I did manage to dig out the overhead speakers, are they are the same bolt hole locations as the rear hatch, so that's good! Just got to figure out the harness!

Earlier XJ's had speakers in the hatch hence the holes there for them. Your harness won't have any wiring for them so your best bet is to pull your harness out of your hatch and feed new wires in with the rest. The old wiring will most likely be stiff and won't like being pulled through and around corners. While it's out, it would be worth checking the wires at the point between the hatch and the body for any damaged wires, and any repairs you make want to be outside of that area. For example, if you did a solder repair in that area, it would likely crack and fail due to the movement of the wires in the area.

Or you could get hold of an earlier hatch with speakers, so you have the harness and the speaker grills already fitted. The wiring as it goes into the Jeep is slightly different, the bit I remember is the wires for the cargo light and the extra speaker wiring. If you did this, I'd advise trying to get some of the wiring from the donor Jeep to make sure you have both sides of the connectors.

that's for the info! From what I read on the internet, it seems like the hatch speakers uses the connections that are located behind the spare tire, but maybe I'm wrong.. Since I already have the overhead speakers, where can I run these speakers to without going to the back of the head unit?

Yeah, they would use the connections behind the spare tyre. I'm no speaker expert so I don't know if it'd cause any issues running both sets of speakers from the original cabling or how would be best to be honest.
