Default 1996 XJ - did'ja ever clean your door switches?

Don't know the history behind this nice '96 but it's got DOG in It and HAND CREAM (melting the steering wheel) and God only knows what kind of goo that's been in the Jeep before I was lucky enough to save it.

Electric door / window switches DO work, but very hard to operate..... the switches in my '88 Limited were not like this. I guess I can take the switches completely OUT of the panel and clean them with gunk or something and blow them out? Is there a better method than replacing them?...

And what's the deal with cranking the engine and getting out of the Jeep to check something and the door closing and locking me out of my own car? Is this a "safety feature" or do I always have to carry a 2nd set of keys with me ?

Thanks,
Mark

Try cleaning with a good electrical contact cleaner like CRC. Do not use an engine cleaner like Gunk.

If the door is closing on its own, try replacing the gizmos that are supposed to hold it open. Look in the door jamb, and you'll see them above the lower hinge. A small arm that slides into the door when you close it. If it's missing, replace it!

BlueRidgeMark,

Thanks... will try that, Mark (CRC cleaner).

As far as the silly door thing goes.... yeah, you're right... the doobob for the door is MISSING!! I better get that replaced before I get locked out again WITH the engine running!!

... off to check the "check engine light" with this Actron code reader,
Mark

Yeah, that door check (I think that's what it's called) prevents your door from slamming against the hinge stops. You don't want that happening, as it can break the hinges loose from the door frame itself. That is Not Good!
