Year: 1996
Model: Grand Cherokee (ZJ)
Engine: 4.0
Default 1996 XJ Parts numbers conflict

Recently bought a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, 4.0 Straight 6 A/T =RIGHT HAND DRIVE=
I knew the old girl had a few issues, but got it from a friend, who is the original owner, Car has sat unused for a few years.
Full service done, coil packs replaced, new ignition leads etc, she starts and runs great, but after 20 mins or so of driving, starts to lose power and splutter
Headlights and dash lights increase and decrease in brightness randomly, and a few other "electrical' issues.
After another visit to mechanic and then auto electrician, I am told I need to replace the body control module - problem - I cannot get a new, recon or even second hand part in South Africa
I have no problem getting the part shipped from the USA, but, Jeep South Africa says the part number is: 5602 8311. All the part numbers I find searching online differ, and I am loath to pay good money to ship the incorrect parts around the world.
If somebody could give me some clarity on this parts number issue (and suggest a good parts supplier who will ship internationally) I would be most grateful

Many thanks
Steve

1) You are posting in the XJ section, not the ZJ section...as far as I know, a '96 XJ do not have "body modules"

2) You have RHD (like me)..while you get a lot of help on this USA based forum, my observation is not much knowledge is available on RHD specific issues

3) If you have no luck, you may wish to join the Oz Jeep forum, as their is so many RHD owners

4) I forsee a "used" part being needed..hence point 3

New to Jeeps in general, so going on what the mechanic who worked on the car told me, and he said it was an XJ.
Will post a pic when the sun comes up - it's 2 am here
I have read that some models have no BCM
Would Vin number help clarify this?

If it has a coil sprung rear suspension it is a ZJ = Grand Cherokee

If it has a rear leaf suspension, it is a plain old Cherokee = XJ

There are many other differences...and similarities

When searching on part numbers, remove the space. So 5602 8311 becomes 56028311. This part number comes up as:

94-95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine Computer Module 4.0L 6 CYL ECM PCM 56028311 ZJ

https://www.jeepsunlimited.net/94_95...cm_56028311_zj

Not sure it you can view this site from SA.

I'd start by finding and cleaning all of the grounds and connectors you can access. I think that's more likely your problem than replacing the body computer, which won't affect how the engine is running.
