I have a problem with my 1996 Cherokee that I can't figure out. It drives fine for about 60 Kilometers (40 miles) then starts to stutter and backfire like its running out of fuel. If I pull over and shut it off then restart it it runs fine again.
So far I have replaced the following parts:
Dist cap and rotor (they where worn)
Coil
Cam sensor
CPS
Coolant temp sensor
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
I have cleaned and properly gaped the plugs
The Cat has been removed so the downstream O2 sensor is out of the picture but the upstream O2 sensor checks out fine.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated

Have you pulled any codes?
Since it happens at precise intervals, I am wondering if the computer looks for the catalyst oxygen sensor and when it can't find one, it starts to compensate. Just a guess.
But pull the codes and see if it tells you anything.

I havent pulled codes but I will. The cat has been off for awhile and this problem just started recently.

A '96 can run fine without the rear O2 sensor but will throw a P0138 code, no check light though
If your cap and rotor was worn, what was the nature of the wear ?
The distibutors in these vehicles are known to wear the bush, you may try to examine the rotor shaft for lateral play, I dont know the specs, but I have read of some people having the worn dizzy issue
The fuel pump sock filter in the tank can also get very scungy, its possible that is partially blocked
