1997 Jeep Cherokee rough idle (surging and sputtering) and loss of power
I'm need of help ASAP. I'm out of ideas and money. I have a 1997 jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 2wd. It is running way too rich, sputters at idle and surges, and when I floor it, it stops sputtering but takes FOREVER to climb rpms and all the power is just gone. Here's what's been done: CPS, Spark plugs, plug wires, the distributor cap and rotor is okay and fuel pump replaced 900 miles ago. There is no CEL whatsoever. I'm at a total loss with this car. It is also backfiring out of the exhaust. It does this when the engine is stone cold and hot as well.

(I take it you saying it runs rich you mean you smell fuel? Hope you don't have a leak
As often the case, what you describe could be a few different things, but they are exact same symptoms as when my CAM sensor went out. Can have similar symptoms as bad CPS. R n R is easy procedure.

Unplug the front O2 sensor. It will throw a code but runs on a preset calculated value, and does not use your sensor for fuel flow. If it gets better then your front sensor is bad.
