1998 4.0 Injectors
Hello. Just a PSA to those interested about fuel injectors / which to buy.
I have a 96 and a 98.The 96 idles very smoothly but the 98 was idling with a slight stumble, which I can't stand, and I fussed around trying to get it to smooth out. It was needing the usual tune-up stuff (plugs/cap/button/wires) which I replaced but the stumble remained. Then I removed the injectors and made an attempt to clean them. Using a piece of fuel hose on the injector inlet (clamped) and an air hose male fitting on the opposite end of the fuel hose (also clamped), I filled the hose with injector cleaner. Then, with the electrical contacts connected to the battery via a harness I made, I attached an air hose to the fitting. It blew the injector cleaner through the injector. I did this several times per injector. That being the best I could come up with as a method for cleaning them, I reinstalled them. Sure enough, the stumble remained.
Last week I got on Amazon and ordered a 6-pack of fuel injectors for about $44.00 total. They arrived yesterday and I installed them this afternoon. The whole job with clean-up is about 1/2 hour. That solved the stumble. I took the truck for a drive around town (stop/idle/go) and am impressed with the results; very smooth idle and acceleration.
The injectors I bought are in the link below. They differ a lot from the ones I pulled out. The old ones are black and have a single hole. The new ones are yellow/orange, have four holes and the injector body is slimmer. Otherwise, they are the same length, have the same o-ring port sizes, the same connector receptacle and accept the old fuel rail clip retainers as the old ones. They also come with a 1-year warranty, which I have not yet gone online to register.

At that price they are without a doubt non genuine. Keep in mind the injectors themselves act as buffers for the injector driver circuits inside the ECU.

Not to disagree, but as far as I know all the PCM/ECU does is ground the injectors to turn them in for a short time to control mixtures. Digital drivers. I doubt even a different resistance value would make a difference. Anyway, they are probably better than the junk Siemans that the factory put in.

BTW, the new injectors as-listed on the site have some excellent reviews that, for $44.00, I was willing to trust. You'll always get your bad reviews but, to my eye, you can spot who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't. Besides, they have a 1-year warranty. You just need to keep the card that comes with them because on it is Amazon's product identification number that must be referenced for a smooth return transaction.
