I was taught that a quart or less every thousand miles is considered normal. And with 230,000+ miles on the thing, I'm pretty impressed it's less than that. And in retrospect I think I exaggerated the number - a while back I went from 3000 mile to 5000 mile change intervals and generally I find myself adding around a quart or so sometime between changes. But that said, I think I will do a compression check (assuming I can find my compression gauge).

My Dad had a 94 XJ and it burned a quart between changes from the first day he owned it - and he bought it brand new.

On the day he retired it due to excessive rust the engine had over 400k miles on it and still ran smooth and strong.
