Default 1998 RHD ecm replacement

I have been told the ecm in my rhd cherokee is bad. My mechanic says the replacement has to come from another 98 rhd. Is this true or would one for a normal left hand drive cherokee work? I'm not a mechanic, just a mail carrier trying to keep the jeep I love using on the job running. Any help is very appreciated.

There should be a label on the PCM with the part number. All in my 97-98 parts catalog start with 56041, so look for that. Do you have a 2.5, or a 4.0L? Auto or stick? And do you have an immobilizer, or SENTRY? Anti-theft stuff.

What issues is it having?

it is a 4.0 automatic with no anti-theft stuff. Apparently the ecm is putting out an incorrect value randomly which causes it to shut off and not crank for several minutes.

By not crank, do you mean it spins but doesn't fire up? ECM issues don't tend to be random like that. Bad CPS would be more common.

I am of the opinion this is probably not correct, the parts manual and Google gives x-ref for PCM part nums.

I personally believe that a PCM from a 98 or 99 would work., LHD or RHD should not matter, auto or manual probably would matter

I would be inclined to try a junkyard/Ebay item

alternativly, have your PCM repaired, I shared a link the other day for USA providers who do that

just Google Jeep Cherokee XJ PCM repair
