Default 1999 Cherokee just stopped

So, I was driving with the family yesterday afternoon, when all of the sudden my jeep started to idle rough at the stop light. Never happened before, I went up a small hill got on the gas and nothing. I was able to pull into a side street, and she just stalled.
I tried to start the jeep and it would not turnover. Tried multiple times and once out 20 times it would turnover. I had to stay on the throttle to keep it running, but as soon as I put it in gear, it would die again. It was making a whooshing sound after I let off the ignition switch.
I had to get it towed home and now it sits. She has 275000 mi. But taken care of extremely well, and I have never had this problem before.
I was talking to a friend that said that the mass air flow sensor my be clogged. I did recently changed out the battery about a month ago, and he said that might reset things and the sensor may need to be cleaned out.
Sorry so long, and I'm on my phone, but does anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem.
Thanks all.

Just an update, turned out to be the ignition coil going bad. Everything else turn out to be good. Just some info to others having the same problem.
