So eager to complain that they're not citing the year of the XJ to realize that they're talking about something that was constant on ALL years....

I have no idea if it has a name, but I would never expect to find a replacement anywhere but a junkyard. If I ever figure out how to convert that area into a real vent that I can open and close, you can have mine.

Regardless if it was a constant part in this situation or not, his next thread might not be. Might as well tell him now and get it over with so he can fill his info.

Sorry.. I will refrain from asking for vehicle specifics in the future. I will refer instead to my 1984 XJ in future threads where I need to guess the year/engine.

Ryan - I think your best bet might be at an auto wrecker or from someone who is parting out an XJ. I can only imagine what a dealer would want for that part IF it's even available. I can't see that there would have been a big demand for that part. Good luck with your search - I'm sure they're out there.

mschi - I've often wondered about that too. By its shape it looks like Jeep wanted to do that too or maybe had planned to eventually. Maybe they couldn't figure it out either! (lol)

My assumption is that it can't be done without compromising the strength of that pillar. Maybe with clever reinforcement around it to compensate....but maybe not. I just want some way of getting air to flow all the way to the back for my dogs' sake. I'm thinking about doing something in the roof all the way in the back like a mini pop-up sun roof except just metal, not glass--just something to be able to pop open that will allow air to flow all the way through to the back.

Good idea. You could probably find something at an RV retailer.
