I don't know if they are different on a 2001 BUT here is the path of flow on my 1997 and all the other ones I have seen:

Airbox -> Large hose -> elbow without orifice in front of valve cover -> Valve cover/crankcase/etc -> rear elbow with orifice -> Smaller tube -> nipple on intake behind throttle body

Also - the EVAP is fuel system and not PCV/CCV. If you are getting an EVAP code check to make sure your gas cap is on and tight.

Did you get the code right after getting gas?

no I have cleared it several times and my gas cap seams tight (I had that happen on my Chevy pickup so I thought of that right away)
mine are installed backwards to yours (the plastic pieces that is) would this cause a rough idle and misfire ?

HOWEVER - that is ONLY the rear. Since the system is a CCV system it uses an orifice in the rear elbow instead of an actual valve.

The front is JUST an elbow and is dealer only. What I ended up doing was getting 2 of the Dormans and pulled the orifice restrictor out of one of them and used that in the front. It is a bit tough to grab but it is only snapped in.
Thanks man, you are a life saver. I will be going to orileys in the am

Yes. You just have to did a grommet and elbow that fit. The front elbow is flow through. No metering

Mine broke and I finally had to get another valve cover with them on it from the junkyard. I tried everything and could'nt figure out how to get them off from the inside. I would'nt worry to much. They do serve a purpose but neither are so important that you can't drive without them.

Yes, they are. Unfiltered air will come in your engine, dirty your oil and wear the crap out of your internals, especially on a dusty day. The rear needs to be there for two purposes. One to evacuate the crankcase of dirty fumes air and pressure as well as to allow the engine to function properly since it gives constant vacuum and the computer is programmed to adjust the engine in this condition. I certainly would not recommend running without them. No your engine won't die, but there is also no reason to run without. The grommets get baked on. You can get em out with a screwdriver.

Which one of the two did they decide you don't need on the newer XJs? When I was seraching for these things in the scrapyards I noticed they did away with or capped off one of the two later. I know I ran without anything on the front one of my two because it seemed it was and exhaust port for the valve cover. (That is the air flow was coming OUT of the cover heading over towards the air cleaner.)

They got rid of the front or air in. They still have a vent but its a little different. If air is blowing out of the tube going to the filter then the vacuum side of the system is probably clogged up. That is air in.

It can be a pita but you'll get it out. Then squeeze the new one in. You don't need to remove the cover but don't drop it in the cover.
