i advise against firestone or pepboys or general tire/oil change shops. A real mechanics shop will not charge a flat rate for those services typically - it'll be an hourly rate to do everything at once. Those tests shouldn't take more than an hour or two to complete at a good shop.

The shop I'm going too charges by the hour and the mechanic figured no more than 1 1/2 to do the diagnosis.

Thank you. I found a shop that will do the diagnosis and the first thing the mechanic said was " why would anyone say replace the engine w/o first making sure that it was the engine?" When he said this, I knew this was the right place to take it :-).

Unhappy 2000 Diagnosed

Well the diagnosis is replace the engine. The sound is coming from the inside of the engine and there is no repair. Anybody know where I can get an engine? and install? Looks like I'm down, but I'm not out........I'll ride again

well yea...we knew it was coming from inside the engine...

ask for the results of the compression test and post them here. Did he take the valve cover off and inspect the head?

So much for my recommendation about this shop. They will not do compression test because it's in lower part of engine and is not a compression problem, they will not remove valve to inspect head because they feel it's a waste of time. I'm not a cussing woman but I'm about too. He did mention a bearing, but that was all. They just listened to the noise and hooked it up to get codes. I could have went to Amoco and had them do the same darn thing for free.

CAN SOMEBODY THAT KNOWS JEEPS, HAS A SHOP OR GARAGE.....PLEASE HELP ME !!!! I definitely don't have $1600 for a motor

excuse me, but they need to do what you asked them to do, regardless of whether they feel like doing it. If they didn't do what you asked them to do, then they don't deserve to be paid.
