2000 jeep xj auto transmission
having a little trouble navigating the site ,will try again. so i purchshed a 2000 cherokee limited 2 years . with 104k miles on it.discovered after i got it home it needed forwered floor pans and work on the rear lower quarters ,so i have been plugging away in my garage. i dropped out the rearend and cleaned uo gas tank drive shafts etc. and cleaned up painted etc. any nuts and bolts removed and replaced, most times requiring heat. well , i'm under it one day and decide the nut on the gear selector shaft looks rusty and maybe i should replace it ,Yes i broke it off!! not thinking to apply a little heat. it sheared off clean with the face of the lever connecting to the selector shaft. now considering a mig tack for now to hold in place. i know this is temporary... and this is my question... is this a big job? will it require pulling the tranny? or can i dropp the pan out and perform the work without pulling the tranny? i do see the part is availible on line priced from $35. to $60. which one would you reccomend? can i do this? i am a fair mechanic.thanks for any help. I believe the selector shaft can be pulled without removing the trans. It's a moderate amount of work though. I had the same issue once and just did a quick tack weld to fix it. Never had an issue. Just don't apply too much heat as there is an or-ring and/or plastic seal on the shaft that could start leaking if you melt it.
