2000 XJ 4.0 starting headache!!
I've got a problem with a 2000 XJ 4.0 not starting. I'm ready to send it to the smasher. The engine will turn over and crank, no issue with starting system. Engine will try to run if fuel & starting fluid put in the throttle body. I've ran out of stuff to do any new suggestion would be great. The smasher might just be me an a sledge hammer to ride myself of the frustrations. Here is what I've tried & the results.
- No engine or transmission codes stored in the computer using an OBD II code reader.
- Its got a half tank of fuel, strong battery & starter,
- fuel pressure at the rail is 46 PSI, injectors are clean no blockage
- ignition pack getting spark @ all plugs,
- injectors receiving signal from PCM during engine cranking, ran node lights test for all injectors they lit up like a Xmas tree.
- new crank sensor and cam sensor passed the resistance & voltage test, also installed new cam sensor for CYA made no difference reinstalled original cam senor
- thought it might have skipped timing or fuel pressure on ragged edge. Check timing dtc #1 cylinder to cam position target and alignment housing match, no issues.

He can test for compression, however, he should rule out "air" first.
Try starting the vehicle while feathering the throttle. If it tries to start, that is an indicator that the IAC is not opening during startup to allow some air through. This can be caused by a failing/failed IAC, but can also be the result of a throttle position sensor (TPS) that is feeding bad information to the computer.
A TPS that is erroneously telling the computer that the pedal is fully depressed will cause a no-fuel situation (injectors won't fire - clear flood mode) during startup. A TPS that is erroneously telling the computer that the pedal is partially applied can make the computer shut the IAC during startup.
If you have an OBD2 scanner, the throttle position data is usually available, and very helpful for seeing what the computer is being told.

Maybe not applicable but here's what I found after replacing most of the "not starting or not restarting when warm" stuff. When I lessened the tilt of the steering column I heard the pump chime in on the next attempt, then it started as it should.
