Default 2000 xj 4x4 issues

Hello everyone, ive been driving the same xj for the last 15years, its been a great vehicle but the 4wd has developed some issues. I can still engage into 4x4 but I get a whining noise and drag as well as an imediate smell of heavy weight gear oil. I have a feeling its a bearing in the transfer case or something along those lines but if anyone who has gone through this could weigh in id appreciate it.

Also, first thing I did was change the fluid in tcase and front dif, I pulled the dif cover and everything looked good to me.

Did you put the same type of fluid in both? The transfer case takes Dex II just in case your not aware of it.

Something I never noticed until recently while changing AW4 tranny fluid. After cleaning the drain plug I noticed a D II on the head of it. Sure settles the question of what fluid to use.

Can you get it up on all fours, run it and try to isolate it?

Do it in front of a tree so if something happens it won't get very far.

Then pull the front driveshaft and spin the components by hand. The whining bearing probably won't reveal itself but the drag might.
