2000 XJ Sport 4.0L AW4 4WD Automatic Transmission Issue - Low Speed Downshift
Just noticed this afternoon while coasting through the parking lot at work that at low speeds 5 - 10 mph the transmisson downshifts hard as I press on the accelerator. I went over a speed bump and then acclerated lightly and felt the trans downshift real hard. I left off of the acclerator, let it coast again and then pressed the accelerator lightly and it downshifted very hard, not much of a bang or clunk just the physical jerking.
It did this on a slight grade and on the level. The fluid is full and clean.. still pinkish red in color. Fluid has not been changed recently. I've owned it over a year and put roughly 8k miles on it. Total mileage is 154K.
Any ideas why it downshifts so hard coasting then accelerating like this?
What should I look for?
I do not have a check engine light or any indicator illuminated in the dash.
Any help appreciated.

Could it be that the trans had already downshifted, and you just revved it up against the torque converter? My moms Durango (yes, a different trans) does the same thing. When coasting to under 5-10mph, if you hit the gas it will snap you back a little as the engine will speed up rapidly and hit the converter and want to go.

Problem never replicated itself again after shutting the engine off for a few hours until I was ready to leave work.
I could have better described it as...
Transmission at low speed when I accelerated lightly appeared to be in neutral or slipping for a second or two and then banged when it actually engaged as if I dropped it into gear from neutral.
It did it a couple of times in the parking lot during the one occurrence and that was it, not again since then.
