well ima get under it Wednesday and listen and see if i can pin point the problem i thought i heard but i think its the fly wheel or something because it sounded louder inside the car then out
and if bearings what would i be looking at a new short block? but with how i hear the 4.0 runs, with bad bearings as long as you run lucus or keep oil changed religiously it will still run 50 000 plus miles and a bunch of people have said every 4.0 has some tick or ping

I've had a ping every now and then, but this ticking started recently and it sounded like what you discribe, coming from the fan tapping on something. I might have fixed mines tonight.
This all started when I got the oil changed. I noticed that the tapping noise stops when I place it in neutral or when it shifts to 2nd gear when driving.
I was told it might either be sticky lifters or cracked manifold. I'm going through any/all inexpensive route before taking the jeep to a mechanic. I'm hoping the oil change to 10w-40 dino do the trick.
Good luck.

I had the oil change yesterday and drive for 2 hours and did NOT have that loud ticking from the fan area at all. Drove an hour today and did not hear that ticking.
So, I'm thrilled and hope that whatever oil they gave me was the issue for the noise from the fan area.
