2001 Cherokee Transmission Problem
I hate to post another transmission noise thread, but I have been searching for the past hour or so and cannot find another post that I can get any answers from.
I have a 2001, 2WD, 4.0 w/ auto trans that is making a crazy noise while accelerating in first gear. The best way I can describe it is sounding like an electric car taking off. Its a dull electronic sounding whine that I am only getting while in first gear. The transmission shifts fine and goes in and out of gear normally.
I just changed the fluid and filter earlier this week and just this morning I took off the transmission inspection cover to check the flex plate bolts. I was kind of hoping they would be loose, but they were fine. Is there anything else I can check?

Could be air in the torque converter. May need more AT fluid. Mabe not. If you know that you put in the right amount give it a little while. Mine was making a similar sound and when I changed the fluid it took a few days for the noise to go away.

Is it kinda like a straining sound? Do you have loss of power to the wheels? I have been dealing with this for a while and I think I am about to drop this tranny and take it in for a rebuild.....so frustrated!

I haven't noticed any loss in power. I really haven't noticed any differences at all besides the noise. I used Pennzoil ATF, it was the multi-purpose stuff that is recommended for the Dextron/Mercon that the manual specifies. I originally picked up the Chrysler specific 4+ (or whatever it was), but returned it after I realized it wasn't the right stuff.
The only thing that I can think is that there might be air in the torque converter like The Black said, but only because I believe the transmission was overfilled prior to me changing out the fluid. I'm thinking maybe I'll drain and refill again to try to help things out.
Thanks for chiming in. I was getting a little frustrated that it took a sarcastic remark on my part to get any answers...
