2001 Jeep Cherokee cracked head
#46
Hey, give the guy a break! We can't all be know-it-alls about Jeeps! My first jeep was a 97 ZJ and I bought it right before joining this forum in 2010. Because not too many guys had 2000+ Grands then, I didn't hear about the problem which was just starting to appear in XJs, the forum section I wasn't following. By the time I needed a new Jeep, I couldn't find a nice ZJ, but got a real good deal on my WJ. At that time, I knew about the head problem, but it wasn't that big a deal for me as long as I watched it closely. When it cracked, I was ready for it. I could have not known about the head problem, and destroyed the engine like most people.
One thing I NEVER would have done is sell a Jeep with a known cracked head and not mentioned it in the deal. That's just not right, no matter how you look at it.

When I bought my '00 it was a kind of running not really drive-able impulse purchase.
I was aware of the head issue but thought the price was not to bad.
I went in assuming the worst and best I can tell got lucky. It is a 0331 head but don't know if
it is the original one. Had 147K when I bought her 7 years ago. About a 167K now.
In my travels I have been able to scoff 2 TUPY heads. 1 for free from an '04 TJ
with a lower end knock and the other for $50 from an '04 WJ with a cracked piston top.
Just in case. They could be usable as is, rebuildable, or just door stops.
Hope to never find out.

If you're asking me, get one ready for a swap, wrap it up, then relax. As with car racing, having a fresh bullet in the trailer is a good confidence builder.

p.s. How's the ignition upgrade/downgrade running? Now you can use Autolite AP-985 plugs (not APP-985 for 00-01) and not mess with them for 100,000 miles. Throw those crap Champion plugs away.

Mr Ralph77, I'm guessing your travels are limited to a 6 mile drive to that part time job at the parts store and back home .At 167,000 miles, I wouldn't worry about it at this point. Both of mine cracked at under 140,000 miles and were meticulously taken care of. Stop hoarding all those valuable Jeep parts.
Took some longer trips to buy parts, MA, NJ, NY, but work and errands is about it.
One of the mechanics at the Jeep dealership told me it was between 75K and 125K that they liked to go.
Said what you said. I was out of the danger zone. As much as I would like to believe that is true not counting on it.
One of the T-Shirts I wear says "Expect the worst but hope for the best."
The other one says "Runs with scissors and does not play well with others." LOL.
