I asked that question because the FSM for my 2000 only shows one. the 30rh for the 2.5L doesn't show any.

The plug that’s hanging down is the input speed sensor

Then your transmission is out of a 97 or older, which used one speed sensor (output only). The boss for an input sensor is there, but was never machined for it. The 98-01 used an output and an input. It, unlike the 97 and older was machined for both. That missing sensor would explain your code. The TCM is freaking out because the input speed sensor is missing. And the PCM is freaking out because the TCM is freaking out. Basically.

I have no experience adding an input sensor when there wasnt one from factory. Can it be done? Probably. But im the wrong guy for that.

Someone likely also swapped parts in the tail end to get the rear sensor to read correctly.

This is way late, but did you feel up there and ensure there isn't a nice round little hole where it could plug in? The sensor isn't very large. Then again if there was and it wasn't in there I think you would be leaking transmission fluid from there, unless it was plugged with something. Transmission might have came from a 2001, but did it have a transmission swap from a 97 in its past...

I took these of my 01 tranny...I thought I saw the mount bolt on yours and was hoping that all you need was the sensor and that it could read through your hollow plug...it seems that your bolt hole is not tapped so its not a "plug and play" even with no "hole". Well hope this helps anyway...I didn't have time to remove mount bolt and see what was underneath the sensor body

Just found this thread and felt like sharing what I was tinkering around with since there ain't much information online about it. I've got a 2000XJ that the previous owner converted to 4WD. Have had a p0720 code for there years but hasn't been noticeably affecting anything, and I pulled the check engine bulb so it doesn't annoy me.

Anyways figure I'd try to clear the code and found the OSS behind that shifting bracket (removed after AZZYs 4wd linkage install). So upon some digging it seems like in the 98+ XJs the trans should have two blue sensors, input and output. I for sure have the blue ISS, but as you can see my OSS is an bigger looking AISIN. I believe this must come from an older gen AW4, not sure though.

So I read that the blue ISS and OSS should be interchangeable so I pulled the input out and tried it in the ouput hole, doesn't fit! So my best guess is that PO swapped a different year transfer case or Tc adapter where the OSS hole only accomdates the older OSS and not the newer blue one. Not sure tho so if anyone knows! Also hopefully this helps someone else out.
