This subject has come up more then once.
And me owning a '00 with CA Emissions and having a 0331 head as made me poke around about this over the years.
So please realize that I have no first hand experience here.
This is just stuff that I think I know. LOL.
So please keep us updated with your progress in whatever direction you do go with this.
Oh and thank you for being able to confirm another thing that I thought I knew.
That the exhaust manifolds are the same part number for a TJ and XJ. LOL.

It's been extremely helpful to be able to talk it out with someone. Honestly when I started this thread it was only for the coil rail because I assumed I read up enough. I'm grateful you brought up other points so I don't have any surprises
I fully plan to post up any info I can. The Cherokee and wrangler forums have been so helpful over the years I'd love to contribute wherever I can

I had a sneaking suspicion that you might not have researched it quite enough.
But I also did not have all the info of exactly what you were doing so I was not sure.
Figured better to throw it out there and be wrong then the other way around. LOL.

I was under the impression that the late model 2 piece manifolds will only bolt to the 0331 head. When i stroked my 01 i got rid of the junk 0331 head and ran an entire 98 system. I had to modify the entire exh to keep my 4 o2 sensors. And ..install a coil rail eliminator. The cam sensor just drops in in place of he distributor...just follow the appropriate directions

What I would like to try and do is turn an '00 or '01 into a '99 of sorts.
Use the engine out of a '99 with the distributor, the 2 main engine wiring harnesses, the computer, and a '99 exhaust.
I am kind of thinking that is all it would take but........ LOL.

If the adapter plate lets you bolt up the 2 piece manifold to the 99 head then you dont need a 99 exh system. The coil rail eliminator is really easy....you need to splice a foot or two of wire to the 4 wires going to the coil rail plug... get a sheet metal bracket to mount it on the overflow bottle and your done. Didnt like the 2 piece manifold for my stroker...the exh manifold ports are a lot smaller than earlier years and i needed the higher flow but if your keeping stock then it sounds good

I think that's not a bad idea at all. And if you have a strong running 00-01 XJ I would even take it a step further and say to replace the 0331 head before anything happens to keep it strong running
In my particular case, after years of owning various 4.0s.... I feel like my lower end is on its way out. Either the crank bearings or slight piston slap, it's noisy down there. So when I started this thread it was to gather info for an entire engine swap
