2001 Stock XJ MPG Questions
Hello everyone! I've had my 2001 XJ automatic for almost two months now and love pretty much everything except the MPG. It seems I average around 13-14 mpg and this is in a somewhat rural area, not a city. The jeep also has fairly low miles, around 120,000. Is this normal or is it possible something is going on? I did recently take it on an about 80 mile road trip on the highway and calculated 24 MPG which really surprised me (maybe my math was off). I then drove it 80 miles back and another 70 around where I live before filling up and came up with 14 MPG once again...
Edit: So I looked up on fueleconomy.gov what they rate the 2001 XJ.

xender With all the vehicles in the past I usually averaged 1 MPG less than what their combined rating is. In this case they're saying 15 MPG combined. So maybe 14 is normal, at least for me.

13-14 combined is normal for me. Driving a brick around town isn’t that efficient unfortunately. There were a couple times where I was seeing around 18-19 but that was because I was doing lots of highway driving.

Also what size tires are you using ? what your gear ratio ? do live were it is flat or full of hills ? all things mater but my 2001 gets about 16 around the city , last but not least how do you drive ? easy or hard ?

If not done recent like already, replace the spark plugs, replace the O2 sensor(s), air filter, check for leaky injector, and such. make sure tires are inflated correct like, and make sure that the brakes are not a dragging.

Lifted and stroked 01 driving around flat LI 14-16 ...driving downhill from VT, ALL highway except for 200 yards 17-18..driving around sidestreets even for a couple of miles kills your mileage...NO JEEP ever got 24...unless it was towed. It also goes down if you spend much time above 70 MPH... have had 2 , stroked and stock for almost 500K ...all ballpark 14-16...less in city traffic, slightly more steady flat highway

I could do 24 on the highway in Florida when it was stock and 2wd.
Even with my lift, tires, roof rack, winch bumper, etc. it still gets 14-15 in town and 18-19 highway. There are plenty of threads on poor mileage. They usually boil down to basic maintenance. Plugs, cap, rotor, O2 sensor, exhaust leaks, tire inflation, speedometer calibration... those are the usual suspects.

1996 Sport 2WD - Keeping the engine tuned, driving with factory stock size tires at proper inflation over flat terrain and in normal city driving my last three mileage checks (each fill-up) show I'm averaging 19 MPG. True engine mileage is approaching 258K. Oil is 5W-30 full synthetic changed every 3 months. I drive very conservatively, though. I'm that guy in the right lane observing the speed limit.

Wow, you guys are making me feel good about my 15-18 in my 6" lifted MJ on 32s! Mostly rural highway. Worst I've gotten is 14 due to letting it warm up a lot in the winter. It got 21-mpg when I first bought it with stock height and tires, a 5-sp manual, and 3.07 gears.
