2001 XJ sport stalling / rough idle
Hey everyone, I’ve been baffled with an issue I’m having on my xj I picked up last year. I’ve read a bunch of threads from all over the internet with sort of similar issues. I have an 01 xj sport with 203k on it and over the past few months I’ve experienced intermittent stalling and rough idle issues. If I let it sit overnight, there’s a good chance it’ll start and die immediately, but start back up again and I have to keep my foot on the gas when at a stop for a few minutes then it might be fine. It might run totally fine for a good chunk of the day, then I let it sit for an hour or two and it’s back to stalling on startup and stalling at stoplights. I let it sit again for 30 minutes or a couple hours it’s and it’s fine again. Once threw a p1294 code but hasn’t shown up since.
I’ve checked fuel pressure which was fine, cleaned IAC, visibly checked wires for signs of shorting. I have a new IAC and TPS on the way.
My buddy and I did a head gasket job on it before this all started and seemed to happen right after. Could it be related to that? An electrical issue maybe? PCM? Shorting somewhere? I’m at a loss.

Check for the following.
I'm having similar issues. Still chasing the issue, but I have done some of the basic stuff and the idle has improved. Sill awaiting a Mopar IAC, hopefully this will solve my issues.
- Vacuum leaks.
- Use only Mopar Only Sensors
- Clean grounds

Welcome
If you experience new symptoms right after any work that was done; you'd first of all need to revise the work that was done
Not sure how you went about with the headgasket, if you removed anything else etc. But if it was running fine before and crap after the work, I think I would start with that.
Of course, it could be totally coincidental. Could be. But less likely than something happened/damaged/came loose during the job. It can even be as simple as a connector not seated properly. Check everything.
Do the free stuff first, you might not even need more parts..
