2002 Jeep Cherokee gearbox
We have a 2002 Jeep Cherokee (in Australia) that has a 5 speed manual transmission . When the owner was looking for a oil level plug he removed a bolt from the left hand side of the gearbox, very close to the front. it's a very ordinary bolt but when he went to replace it wont go back in, only about a inch of its maybe 2 and a half inches will go back in . Its probably about a one quarter thick bolt. So does anyone know what it's for and how to get it back in.
Thanks
Rob
Thanks
Rob

It could/should have a NV3500 5 speed. Will get photos tomorrow when its light over here
To find the type of gearbox I need to find the code which according to manual is
BODY CODE PLATE
DESCRIPTION
BODY CODE PLATE
A metal body code plate is attached to the floor pan
under the drivers seat (Fig. 3). Disengage the snaps
attaching the carpet to the floor pan to read the
information. There are seven lines of information on
the body code plate. Lines 4, 5, 6, and 7 are not used
to define service information. Information reads from
left to right, starting with line 3 in the centre
I have pulled the carpet upon the right hand side as that's the drivers side In Aussie but haven't found it.
Any ideas ??? Shall I strip the car looking for it?

My friend down under,.........
you may have opened up a can of worms, which is gonna be hard to close.
I saw your photos........
that bolt appears to hold some type of "check-ball" internal to the transmission.. by removing it you may have inadvertently begun a self destruct scenario.....
check this link for the description of your trans.....pay close attention to the subject "Instructions"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Venture_Gear_3500_transmission
for future reference, MOST tranmissions/oil pans/ transfer cases/ differentals/ etc. have a drain/filler bolt which is ONLY a max length of like 1/2" the bolt your "friend" removed is like 3 inches long. if you look at the very end of the bolt (at least from the photo you included), it appears to be "CONCAVE" / "CONVEX" ( i can't recall which at the moment, too hung over, ) i.e. "dished-inwards" (at the thread end)........ this tells me that it was used to hold something else in place internal to transmission.
Best bet sir...........consult a JEEP dealer, bring photos and talk to head wrench there....or shop who specializes in Jeep repair.
I wish I could be of more help here. but if you print out and bring photos with you as well as the bolt and explain situation, they would probably help you out at no or minimal charge.....just a thought!
best of luck sir!
cheers!

By The Way...... the "FILLER" bolt is located on the TOP of the transmission. not side.
17mm bolt. you can check jeepforum.com or ramforum.com search: "filler bolt NV3500".
the drain is the 17mm ALLEN bolt you show in your picture.
good luck sir!

Ouch. The NV3550 has a "DO NOT REMOVE" plug too eh? That's rough.
May also just be crap on the threads if the bolt - and threaded hole - are that long.
Try JeepForum.com or LostJeeps.com for help with your KJ. Unfortunately Chrysler renamed the Cherokee line only in North America to Liberty (shameless marketing abuse of 9/11) and this site reflects that.

I found this youtube clip that pretty much tells us what it is for, But I think the box has to come out.
It is a NV2500 as was suggested by cpnwrench.
We have the Subaru liberty here in Aussie.
I would like to thankyou all for your help and I am so pleased it isn't mine.
PS. Do not remove that bolt
