231 j t-case issues
my 92 i have the 231 t case and ever since i got it the transfer case never shifted right. the shifter was always out of whack. it would always pop out of 2wd, and if it wasnt perfectly aligned in 4 hi or low it would make a HORRIBLE grinding noise once you go from N to drive. i was able to re adjust the linkage and made it alot better. but now in 4 hi under any hard accel i get grinding/slipping. 4 low works fine.
is this the range selector fork possibly? should i go for a novak shifter kit or is this most likely an internal issue? i have no problem tackling this myself i would just like to have some idea what might be wrong before tearing it apart. thanks.

fork pads are probably worn, and could be more worn / damaged inside from the improper previous adjustments. Did you check the fluid level and fluid condition? has it been changed?

when i bought it about 2 years ago i changed the fluid, checked it and its full. it would only slip and grind in 4 hi. i still would have the horrible noise when shifting too if the shifter was not "properly engaged", id have to shift back to neutral, and re adjust the 4wd shifter hoping when i drop back into D i dont get the horrible neck hair raising grinding from my transfercase. lol. i think when i get a chance ill disconnect the linkage and manually shift it from underneath. im still pretty certain it is internal. the jeep doesnt have a t case drop or anything that would mess up the linkage. the trans rubber mounts appeared to be OK but i didnt check to see how loose they were

i popped the linkage off and manually put the case in 4 hi, took her for a ride and no grinding what so ever! so thats good i ended up blowing a brake line so ill have to fix that, but better then doing the t-case. the linkage is bent up and out of whack, when i put the shifter in 4 hi and the case in 4 hi, the linkage doesnt even line up so thats definitly a problem. im looking at getting the boostwerks kit for 40 bucks cant go wrong.

either that, or find a good used linkage in a boneyard and swap them out. Its surprising how little the linkage can be out of whack to cause it to grind.
