Default 235/75/15 Tire Rub one side? Abnormal?

I've just installed new Michellin LTX AT2 tires on my '98. They are 235/75/15 and they are rubbing on the control arm but only on the driver side. I've run this size BF Goodrich All Terrain TA on my other XJ without problems so I thought I'd be fine.

Having no experience with tire rub, is it abnormal to rub on only one side?

I've just replaced front shocks, yet I still need to replace sway bar bushings and links as they are worn. Keeping it mainly stock for daily driving and towing.

I never had 235's rub. I'd say that's abnormal. What size did you have on previously?

usually if you have rub due to the tire size it does it on both sides. only doing it on one side is weird. I'd say the shock on that one side may be going bad but you replaced them already. have the springs been replaced at all?

The LTX AT2 may have a larger bulge width than the old style All Terrain T/A.

You may be having parts of your front end going bad from excessive wear. Ball joints, bushings, etc. all affect clearances.

This is the first time I have ever heard of getting a rub with a 235. I put 235's on my ex's 2wd and never had a problem. I would start by inspecting your suspension for warn out part and sagging springs.

This is a stock XJ, with 100,000 miles. Springs are good, the only suspension issue I've found is the passenger side sway bar bushings. I'll be replacing the bushings and both links this weekend, hopefully it clears things up.

These tires are slightly wider than the BF Goodrich of the same size, but only a couple millimeters. I'm just shocked that it rubs on the drivers side only.

I have seen where the steering stops have worn down and let the steering move the tire more and lets it rub. Maybe check out that?

Thanks ZJMAX, I'll take a look at the stops today.

Changing out the bushings and end links for the sway bar will not make a bit of difference on your rubbing problem.

They're totally shot, so I'll be doing them anyway.

So check my logic for me please. When turning left, the inside back of the drivers tire rubs on the control arm. To counter for this I assume I'll want to adjust the passenger side steering stop to prevent how far left I'd be able to turn the system.

You need to go to an alignment shop and find out what's wrong.

Normal XJs don't do this.
